Homemade Pill Pocket Recipe

With the onset of the freezing cold winter months, we are seeing a lot of dogs suffering from arthritis and other chronic conditions. Part of the management of chronic conditions is often daily medication. The vet does this so easily…. Just open the mouth, push the pill over the back of the tongue, a quick rub of the nose and it’s gone! Nothing to it.

So day one, the dog gets the pill. Day two, it’s a mild struggle but the dog gets the pill. Day three, two family members wrestle the dog and you think the dog gets the pill, later to find it under the couch. Day four, the dog runs – not a chance!

Here is a recipe for making homemade pill pockets – tasty morsels of malleable putty that neatly hide a tablet, make the dog think he is getting a treat – and the dog gets the pill. Nice one! Give it a go today.

Pill pocket recipe:

1/2 cup flour

1/4 cup peanut butter

1/4 cup milk

Mix it all together to form a thick dough and use it to form small balls with an indentation in it large enough to squash the pill into. Roll it into a ball, make a fuss and offer it to the dog for being ‘good’ like sitting on command.

The dog gets the pill.
